Top 5 Best Swaddle Blankets for Babies | 2017 Reviews

Top 5 Best Swaddle Blankets for Babies | 2017 Reviews

Soothing a baby to sleep is one of the most challenging phases of parenthood. How well you do it can make or break your night because it means that your child could go on and sleep through the night – or not. Which means you, the parent, won’t get the sleep you very much deserve, too.

Over the years, many parents have turned to swaddling to soothe their babies and put them to sleep. What is it? It is basically the act of wrapping your baby tightly in a cloth, much like the way they are wrapped inside their mom’s womb. It is said that this familiar setup helps them become calmer and more comfortable, enough so they fall asleep without putting up a fight.

The secret on how to swaddle a baby lies on the very cloth that is used to do the swaddling. You need to make sure that it is comfortable for the baby, regardless of the temperature, and that it is secured enough to give them that familiar in-the-womb feeling.

It is also important for parents to take note that swaddle blankets need to be wrapped around just right so it does not choke the baby nor does it allow them to wiggle around freely. Remember that loose pieces of fabric around your baby could pose a major risk to their safety and may result to Sudden Infant Death Sindrome (SIDS).

In choosing the right best swaddle blankets, parents should take note that not all baby swaddles are made the same as some are just much better than the others. If you are not sure where to start with your shopping, check out our reviews below!

Miracle Blanket Swaddle

Miracle Blanket Swaddle

There’s truly something about the Miracle Blanket that just simply gets a baby to doze off with no problem – even the makers of Miracle Blanket can’t even quite figure it out. Regardless, we love that it has become one of the best sleeping solutions for babies.

Now, what does this blanket have that makes it a true miracle? We are not quite sure either but it’s probably the combination of snug swaddling and some abdominal pressure that helps soothe them. Maybe this makes them feel like they are still inside their mom’s womb? Most likely. But, whatever the reason is, we love that it works!

Another great thing about these muslin swaddle blankets is that it comes with a foot pouch at the bottom that’s snug and yet remains comfortable. It can be very difficult to kick themselves out of the blanket and the arm flaps help secure their arms. This helps stop your baby from making facial scratches or make sudden movements (such as the startle reflex) that will only wake them up and interrupt with their sleep. Most importantly, you do not have to deal with Velcro straps which can be very disturbing when you try to make diaper changes in the middle of the night.

If you have never considered getting a swaddling blanket for your little one because the concept and the whole process of wrapping them up is very intimidating to you, there is no reason to be with this product. It makes swaddling a very simple chore and you can use it even if you have zero experience.

The only downside to using this blanket is that it comes with only one size so it might be all too easy for the baby to outgrow it – then you will have to go looking for another brand to love. Still, this means you have a few months to enjoy lots of sleep and rest! Other moms also suggest going for the blankets with patterns as it is easier to check if they are still breathing, especially if you are looking at them through a baby monitor.

Without a doubt, this product deserves to be at the top spot!

Halo Sleepsack Cotton Swaddle

Halo Sleepsack Cotton Swaddle

As the name suggests, the Halo Sleepsack actually functions more like a sleep sack than a swaddle blanket the way the Miracle Blanket does.

Still, it is one of the most highly recommended products by parents when it comes to soothing their babies as they go to sleep.

This sleep sack comes in two variants: the cotton and the microfleece version. The former is, obviously, best for use during the warmer months while the latter is best during the winter months. These blankets come in two sizes, one for newborns and another for slightly older kids.

What makes this product one of the best blankets available in the market? Parents love the fact that it can be adjusted depending on the different sleeping styles of your baby. You can have them in swaddle position with both arms in, with the hands to the face or with one or both arms out. The versatility ensures that your baby is able to get the best sleep they can possibly get. They can even use it simply as a blanket once they are big enough to stop swaddling.

There are many other things that we love about the Halo swaddle. For one, it comes with a sleeveless design to prevent overheating. Parents should remember that this sleep sack is worn over their usual nightwear. The bottom part of the sack is also quite wide and allows lots of room for kicking; it is actually recognized as Hip Healthy by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute. Most importantly, it uses a two-way zipper design so you can unzip from the bottom to make quick diaper changes without disturbing your baby.

Perhaps the main concern that many parents have is that the baby’s arms seem to easily find its way to the bottom of the swaddle. This usually ends up with the swaddle being raised near the head which can be a safety risk. However, a permanent stitching has been added to keep the swaddle in place; just make sure to get the right size so there is no way for them to wriggle their arms out.

We still think this is a great product and deserves to be in second place.

Aden + Anais Classic Muslin Swaddle Blanket

Aden + Anais Classic Muslin Swaddle Blanket

The Aden and Anais swaddle blanket is among the most popular in the market and for good reason. They are huge, comfortable and can be used for other purposes beyond swaddling. What parents love about this product – yes, including us here at ParentsNeed HQ – is that it continues the natural muslin swaddle blankets that moms love and so much more!

These swaddle blankets come in light and heavy varieties so they can be used for both warmer and colder months. We would have to say though that the heavier blanket is among the best available in the market for use during the winter season.

With a large 47 by 47 inch size (prewashed), these are also the largest so you can fit in your baby no matter how young or old, tall or short, big or small they are. Despite its generous size, the blanket remains breathable and comfortable and becomes softer with every wash. A lot of moms also love the fact that these blankets can be used not just for swaddling. For example, they use it as a stroller cover, nursing cover, burp cloth, tummy time blanket, changing pad cover and so much more. Now, you do not have to buy any of these other cloths and blankets because the Aden and Anais swaddle blanket already covers that.

Lastly, we love that these blankets come in very cute colors and designs so you can mix and match according to your style. Its cotton material ensures that it stays durable even after many washes and that it remains breathable when used so your baby will never overheat in them but still keep them warm.

A fair warning, though: some moms have noticed that it produces extreme lint during the first few washes. We suggest washing them separately during these times to prevent getting the lint on your other clothes. It will also shrink when you wash but only just a tiny bit. Because of that, we believe this blanket deserves to be at the third position in our list.

Woombie Original One-Step Baby Swaddle

Woombie Original One-Step Baby Swaddle

At first glance, the Woombie swaddle looks very tight and small but you will have to remind yourself that babies come from the womb which is probably snugger and tighter. Don’t worry, your baby is in the perfect place and the cozy feeling is actually what helps soothe them and get them to sleep longer.

Now, what is there to like about the Woombie swaddle? Well, for starters, it is great for newborns as it provides among the most comfortable fit. The fabric stretches and moves with the baby and yet remains snug and tight to create a womb-like environment, as if they are being snuggled and held.

A lot of parents love this product a lot because it keeps the baby tight and secure inside. The only place that the baby can wriggle their hands and body out is through the neck hole which is near impossible even if you have a determined baby inside. Sure the fabric in the neck area will probably stretch over time (and after many failed attempts) but you can just wash and dry it on hot water to get it back to its original shape. Some brands will tend to bunch up the fabric near the head which can be very dangerous but the Woombie amazingly does nClick to replace anchor textot.

Now, before you get carried away by all the amazing Woombie reviews, you should keep in mind that this particular swaddle blanket is designed for smaller babies, particularly newborns and up to 19 pounds (5 to 13 for newborns and 14 to 19 for big baby size) so as your kid starts to grow beyond this, you will have to look for a better swaddling blanket made for bigger sizes.

If you are looking for a good brand blanket to start on your newborn, definitely check out the Woombie as it is basically an extension of their life inside the womb. For this, we place the product at the fourth spot in our list.

Summer Infant Swaddleme Blanket

Summer Infant Swaddleme Blanket

The Summer Infant SwaddleMe blanket is just one of the two blankets that uses Velcro straps (the other one being the Halo Sleepsack), which could be a good or bad thing for you. It can get rather easy for the baby to work their way out of a Velcro strapped blanket plus taking them out or changing diapers will mean having to deal with the ripping noise which can startle your baby and interrupt their sleep.

Regardless, we still believe that the Summer Infant swaddles are great. They are not made of thick material so they are not the most ideal for use during the winter months but they are awesome during the summer. Some moms actually still use it during winter and they love it because it keeps their babies warm enough but the material is breathable and prevents heat rash. They are definitely great for use on babies who are still a few weeks old to a few months old.

We also like the prints and patterns that these blankets come in and the cotton material makes it nice, soft and breathable so your baby will not have a hard time sleeping in them.

However, our main gripe about this swaddle blanket is that there seems to be very limited space in the hip area. We believe that the bottom is rather narrow which might cause orthopedic problems in the future. If Summer Infant can make their product slightly wider at the bottom, one that is recommended by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, then that would be even more awesome.

Another problem we did run into these swaddle blankets is that they tend to be inconsistent with their sizing. Some can run smaller or bigger than what its label indicates so finding the right size for your baby can be tricky. We recommend not taking out the labels when trying them out just in case you have to return or exchange the item for something else.

For that, we are pushing this down the bottom of our list.
